The Herbal Corner
Spring is coming and I am busy choosing my seeds for the garden. Two years ago my husband and I had alot of land cleared and installed an irrigation system. Now I am ready to plant fruit trees, berry bushes and beds of herbs and flowers and expand my vegetable garden.

Last year was was first year in the new garden location and I was determined to do it all without any type of pesticide or herbicide. I was picking squash bugs and japanese beetles off my plants by hand (with gloves on). But a few days away turned out to be a disaster and the little critters were quick to reproduce to the point that I felt overwhelmed.

This year I will be purchasing some beneficial insects for the garden, primarily praying mantis'. These insects will eat anything in sight. Unfortunately they will eat their own kind too so I will need a balance. I have already seen ladybugs appearing here and there so I will continue to research what else I should purchase and keep you posted on what I decide.

Did you know that companion planting can keep the weeds away and deter some insects from invading your vegetables and fruits? I have been looking for more information on this. Although I do know that corn interplanted with hollyhocks is one example. I will share more as I come across it in my research so check back often.
